Louisiana has a 'Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday' but back-to-school tax holiday suspended
A sales tax holiday, also referred to as a tax-free weekend or week, is a limited period during which certain eligible items are exempt from sales tax.
These tax holidays are usually implemented by states to encourage consumer spending on specific goods.
These holidays often coincide with back-to-school preparations or other periods when states want to boost spending on specific items.
Does Louisiana have sales tax holidays?
Currently, Louisiana has an annual Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday, according to Sales Tax Institute. Previously, the state had back-to-school and hurricane preparedness sales tax holidays, however, the holidays have since been suspended.
Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday 2025
This year, Louisiana's Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday is a weekend-long event, from Sept. 5 until Set. 7. This holiday exempts state and local sales tax on eligible firearms, ammunition and hunting supplies.
Will Louisiana reinstate its Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday?
During the 2025 Legislative Session in Louisiana, LA HB551 was proposed. The bill aimed at establishing an annual sales tax holiday called the "Louisiana Believes in Education Act" on the first Saturday of August each year, during which certain educational and personal items will be exempt from state and local sales taxes, according to Bill Track 50.
The bill would have taken effect on or after August 1, 2025, however, the bill died on June 12, 2025, during the legislative session.
